Ambassador Alexander B. Yano served as the 38th Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces of the Philippines and the first Mindanaoan ever to be appointed in the said highest military position in the country, immediately prior to his current designation as a diplomat.


In his 37 years of military service, Ambassador Yano gained the reputation of a "Soldier's soldier" for his professional competence and excellent leadership that earned him the respect and admiration of his men, colleagues and superiors.


By touching base with the local government units, business community, media, and the academe, Ambassador Yano has brought the military closer to the different sectors of society and gave the public a new perspective about the military-that is, a partner of the people.


His significant positions and duty assignments include: Commanding General of the Philippine Army, Commander of the AFP Southern Luzon Command; Commanding General of the Army's 2nd Infantry Division; the Chief of Staff, Philippine Army; Commanding of the Civil Relations Service, AFP and the concurrent AFP Spokesperson; Assistant Division Commander of the 9th Infantry Division in Bikol; Commanding General of the 601st Infantry Brigade in SOCSARGEN area, and Commanding Officer of Task Force Zamboanga in 2001, where he successfully handled the Cabatangan Crisis in Zamboanga City and rescued civilian hostages from the elements of the Misuari Breakaway Group who initially utilized civilians as human shields.


In 2004, fully utilizing his understanding of the intricacies of the Mindanao conflict as a true son of the island, Ambassador Yano was also appointed as chairman of the Government of the Republic of the Philippines (GRP) Coordinating Committee on the Cessation of Hostilities (CCCH) which oversees the ceasefire agreement with MILF.


A son of public school teachers, Ambassador Yano was born on June 13, 1953 in Sindangan, Zamboanga del Norte. He graduated from the Philippine Military Academy in 1976 and had completed various military schooling and training courses both here and abroad.


He is married to Mrs. Estela Aragon-Yano, a former military nurse, and they are blessed with a son, Ervin Andrew.
